Kazutoshi Mizuno Challenges Premium European Carmakers
63 years-old, Kayutoshi Mizuno, well known as a chief engineer behind Nissan’s GT-R supercar has changed his work environment and plans to change the car industry game once again. Since he left Nissan and joined Taiwanese Yulon Group he is ready to get back on track and make the best possible affordable car.
His hit car Nissan Skyline GT-R, also well known as “Godzilla”, matched Ferrari’s and Porsche’s with its performance, but for half the price of European carmakers. This model was celebrated in movie “2 Fast 2 Furious” and Playstation video game “Gran Turismo”.
The first car to be created under his supervision in Yulon will be the Luxgen U6, a sport vehicle which will be unveiled today.
In an interview Mizuno said that he is not a gambler and he never starts to fight unless he is 100 percent sure that he will win.
On other hand, auto analysts are not that optimistic about Mizuno’s statement. As Takeshi Miyao said, “there aren’t many cases where an individual star designer revolutionized the whole company.”
Yulon Group is founded by Ching-ling Yen in 1951 and it started manufacturing under Nissan’s license five decades ago. The Luxgen brand was founded in 2009 and most of its models are sold all over China.
Mizuno’s plan is to launch his first series of cars in three years from now. This model will feature 1.5 to 2.0 liter turbo charged engines and they will cost just 25k dollars, much less than any German made car. He added that every model will have deluxe interior and design, just as any popular European brand.
Luxgen U6 Turbo Eco Hyper, which was unveiled on Wednesday, improved its engine power 13 percent and it’s 12 percent more fuel efficient.
Unfortunately, even with the new model out already, Yulon Motor shares fell 0.7 percent both in Taipei and Taiwan Stock Exchange Weighted Index.
Yulon’s main competitor in China will be Qoros Automotive Co. owned by GertHeldebrand, former BMW designer. Qoros already tried to take on huge companies like Daimler and Volkswagen, but not that successfully.
Mizuno is hoping he will win over customers with his personal policy that he uses for every car he builds. He also focuses on how he is making cars for customers, not for his bosses.
